Woman stabbed in coffee shop by M&S as witnesses ‘fight off attacker with chairs’

A woman has been stabbed in a coffee shop as brave onlookers rushed to fight off her male attacker.

People close to the woman in Edgware Road in London raced over to try and protect her, with some seen swinging chairs at the man.

An eyewitness spotted a group of workmen jumping out of their van as they were driving past, in a desperate bid to stop the knife attacker.

Cab driver Des O’ Halloran tweeted: “Sickened witnessing a woman being beaten in the road by a male on the Edgware rd.

“I hope she’s ok, brave people getting involved and fighting him off/dragging her to safety, I was too far away to instantly help.”

He later added that he saw people fighting the man with chairs and his taxi passenger had been left feeling shaken after witnessing the ordeal.

Police believe the woman was attacked by someone she knew.

The owner of a shop across the road from the scene said members of the public chased and beat the suspected attacker and held him before police arrived.

Omar Awada, 47, said: “He tried to run away but the local guys managed to catch him and they beat him until the police came.

“It was like Tom And Jerry, they were on him right and left, the guys”, Mr Awada said.

Forensics investigators have been combing the scene for evidence and taking photographs.

A police cordon was set up around Maison Du Sultan and a neighbouring Costa coffee shop, with officers standing guard.

A glass shisha pipe lay on its side on the ground outside the front door of the business, while three chairs and a small table were also knocked over.

A first aid bag could be seen next to a coat and a pair of boots in a neighbouring doorway. These were later collected in a clear plastic bag by a police officer.

A Met Police spokeswoman said: “A female, aged in her 30s, was treated for stab injuries.

“She has been conveyed to hospital; we await an assessment of her condition.

“At this very early stage it is believed the male and victim are known to each other.

“Specialist firearms officers were among those responding.

“No taser or police firearms have been discharged.

“Police remain on scene and enquiries are ongoing.”

A man has been taken to hospital and arrested on suspicion of GBH.

Ally Orwell who was also closeby praised retail workers from Marks and Spencers close to the coffee shop who also came to help.

She tweeted: “Just been at the M&S on Edgware Road when a stabbing happened out side the store.. utterly horrific.. but have to say to M&S all your staff where absolutely amazing… they were so brave and all deserve a pay rise.”
